Shrek Kiosk Project for Pepsi

April 25, 2012

I directed the project for a proposed kiosk system for Pepsi to create a photo-booth type application using small computers equipped with webcams where users could “Cartoon-ize” their faces by superimposing them (including various distortions and color adjustments) onto the heads and bodies of various characters from the movie Shrek 3.

The project was created as a standalone application mostly in Flash, using Actionscript classes, to be installed on small Macintosh computers in retail environments like 7-11s, to be equipped as well with a roll printer that printed out bar codes onto sticky labels that could be redeemed for Pepsi merchandize.  In the process of going through the system and taking their photo and printing out/emailing their final “cartoon-ized” images, the interface captured the user’s name, email, any Pepsi numbers (found under bottle cap) for data collection from remote kiosks.

The user would then receive their custom cartoon via email where they could print or send to friends.  Various characters from the Shrek movies could be selected  and user would pose in virtual “mirror” which was actually a live video feed from the webcam to take their picture.

Ultimately, the intermediary client kiosk company renegotiated the deal with Pepsi prior to rollout of the product, but I have put some partially operative code online here where you can step through much of the system:

Note: the link above is to a web version (not the final one) of the file and some functionality is disabled and it does not run at the intended speed as it would have run off the dedicated kiosk computer.  A webcam is necessary to see all the functionality in action.  Additionally, a final screen where user has option to save image to a flash drive is not included here.
